For a single species the rate of growth may be very different depending on the characteristic of the environment in which it lives. It depends mainly on the availability of food and the temperature of the water. For example, the cod of the different populations of the Atlantic do not measure the same even if they are the same age (4 years).
Short-lived and fast-growing species such as Anchovy have the advantage that they can regenerate the population in a short period of time: a good recruitment means that in a few years the population can increase significantly in number of individuals. Although the opposite, ie, poor recruitment and, therefore, a strong decline in abundance, is also possible. Long-lived and slow-growing species (such as monkfish or cod) have a more stable dynamics, do not suffer highs and lows so pronounced in their abundance. But if overfishing occurs it is more difficult and takes longer for the population to return to its initial abundance levels. Food for Growth For many people who have fish in ponds, especially large ones like koi, size is a concern, they want the fish to be large and beautiful. It is possible, but do not speed up time. On the other hand, many people buy fish as adults, it is an alternative if you want to have pups fast. Small and see them grow properly is beautiful and we will make sure they eat just enough. To get accurate measurement use best digital fish scale. If you want to have healthy fish and size according to your age, the ideal is to have it from a young age to be able to control its food and propitiate a healthy pond. To achieve this, we must take into account the feeding pattern, water temperature, fish maturity, water quality, pond population and genetic inheritance. Feeding Pattern To make fish grow it is advisable to feed it with small regular amounts of well preserved and fresh food. Feeding in large quantities once a day will not ensure that the fish grows more, on the contrary, it will grow but slower than if small rations of food are given. In addition to giving large quantities, if the food is too rich in protein we will have problems with the quality of the pond water. Water temperature All fish are more active when temperatures are high because their metabolism is accelerated. This gives us as a data that the fish, in a pond, will grow more in spring / summer than in autumn / winter. When the water temperature drops, the fish has less ability to digest food. In the winter months when the temperature is below 10C (for cold water fish pond only), it is recommended to feed the fish with wheat germ-based foods because they are easier to digest than the common food. With this winter food also reduces the chance that undigested food will ferment inside the stomach. The problem with this is that pathogenic bacteria can form inside the stomach of fish causing discomfort and in some cases death. As the water temperature rises, the fish will require a higher percentage of protein in its feed for growth, to repair injuries during the winter and for breeding. To do this, we must feed them foods that contain 35% -40% protein based on fishmeal. But let's not forget, in all cases it should be fed with vegetables as well. It is also advisable in early spring to include a food with vitamin supplements to lift the fish's defenses. Fish maturity The growth rate of an adult fish is much lower than the growth rate of a young fish. This is because mature fish to reproduce will use most of their food to produce eggs or sperm. This however does not mean that the fish does not continue to grow over the years. Fish grow their whole life, but at a slower rate after maturity. Therefore it is better to buy a young fish and ensure what we are saying the first 3 years. This will ensure that you get the maximum size when you are a mature adult. Water quality Water quality affects the growth rate of all fish directly. The fish not only loses its appetites when the quality of the water is inadequate, it also suffers other deteriorations. Poor water quality leads to stress and illness. Any parameter of water out of acceptable, will cause the energies of the fish to be used in survival and not for growth. Obtaining high quality water is not impossible to achieve. For this we recommend reading the section Ponds - Lakes . Pond population The quantity, density and dispersion of the settlers has a direct effect on the growth of the fish. An overcrowded fish pond will cause them to grow at a lower rate than normal, this is because they must occupy the same space. Generally, in this kind of ponds the water quality is not optimal. In addition, with high amounts of fish in ponds, the fish will suffer from stress. Therefore, if we want to grow our fish correctly, do not over-problems the pond given that we can achieve better results in terms of growth rates, water quality and sexual maturity. Genetic heritage The genetic inheritance acts directly on the growth of the fish. If the parents were small, the young will be small. If the parents were poorly fed, the offspring will be harder to grow, etc., etc. There is no way to avoid slow growth if the parents were not healthy or well cared for, no medication or food will eliminate the genetic inheritance of the parents.
